Manuel Botubot

Product of the Cádiz CF academy, Manuel Botubot, considered one of the most talented Spanish centre backs, at the half of his first professional season (1976/77) in second division, was signed by Valencia, where, immediately, formed a complementary duo with Arias. Brave, powerful and elegant defender, in 1978 he also received his first and last call-up to the Spanish national team. In the following seasons, he was an undisputed starter, but, with the arrival of Tendillo, he was repositioned as a left-back, playing at excellent level. He won a Copa del Rey in 1979, a Cup Winners’ Cup title in the following season and the 1980 European Super Cup. Considered one of the best defenders in the history of Valencia, after 270 official games and three titles, Botubot leaved the club in 1984 to finish his career to Castellon and Xerez.

Luis Mario Cabrera

An Argentine striker, Luis Mario Cabrera began his career in his country with Club Atlético Huracán in 1975, scoring 19 goals in two years. In 1978, he moved to Spain, to play for CD Castellón in second division. In 1980 he joined Atlético Madrid, but in the following seasons, he was overshadowed by Mexican Hugo Sánchez. Anyway in the 1984/85 season they played together combining 33 goals. The Colchoneros reached the second place and won the Copa del Rey. After the departure of Hugo Sanchez to Real Madrid, Cabrera had more space to play as a starting striker. In 1986 he started in the Cup Winners’ Cup final, lost to Dynamo Kyiv. Towards the end of his career, Cabrera played for Cádiz CF and had a second spell with Castellón (helping them promote to the top flight in his debut season), retiring at 34 with 209 matches and 63 goals in Spain’s main tier.

Miguel Angel

Perseverance and quality were his great virtues during the almost two decades that he defended Real Madrid’s goal. These characteristics made him one of the best goalkeepers in the history of Spanish football. Twelve national and two European titles made him a Whites’ legend. His first steps in sports were as a handball goalkeeper. He began playing football at the age of 18. While playing for Ourense he was discovered by Madrid’s coaching staff, and they did not doubt in signing him. During his first few seasons at the club he didn’t play too much because he was competing for the position with two goalkeepers of the stature of Junquera and the veteran Betancort. His luck changed during the 1973/74 season when Miguel Muñoz was sacked as the coach. With Luis Molowny in charge the Galician goalkeeper was given an opportunity to show what he was capable of, opportunity that he did not waste. His brilliant displays made him the first choice goalkeeper, and he led the team as it conquered seven La Liga titles. His good positioning in front of goal and his agile full length saves earned him the nickname of The cat.

Vicente Del Bosque

Vicente del Bosque is an example of the importance of humility, quality and hard work, and his special blend of all of these qualities has made him a Real Madrid legend. The man from Salamanca was an attacking midfielder with a great capacity for organizing his teammates and was always a regular for all of the coaches who trained him at the club. He started his career at his hometown club of Salmantino until Real Madrid signed him up. Two seasons later, he had made it to the first team but the club had other plans for the young Del Bosque: to send him out on loan to get some more experience. In his first season on loan, he played for Castellón where he suffered several injuries. In the following seasons, he played for Córdoba and then Castellón again. He progressed so much during this period that Real Madrid recalled him for the first team. He made his first team debut in the 1973/74 seasons and from then he played successfully for 11 seasons as part of a truly brilliant midfield made up of Netzer, Velázquez and Pirri, who helped the Whites to win nine trophies. One of the greatest moments of his playing career came against Barcelona in the 1974 Spanish Cup Final. Real Madrid had just lost 0-5 in the league against Cruyff’s team, a Madrid team trained by Molowny got their revenge and beat the Catalans 4-0 in the Vicente Calderón stadium to lift the trophy. He also finished his career with 18 caps for Spain including the European Championships in Italy in 1980. (from: realmadrid.com)
