Peter Wells

After his positive first season at Nottingham Forest during 1975-76, Peter Wells lost his place after squad’s poor start to the following season. Southampton snapped him up for £8,000 and Wells took over from Ian Turner, becoming the Saints’ fifth goalkeeper of the season as Lawrie McMenemy rebuilt his Cup-winning side for promotion. That goal was duly achieved in 1997-78, with Wells playing far more often than Turner. But now he had to compete with Terry Gennoe, who played almost throughout the team’s two Cup runs in 1978-79, including the League Cup Final. Over the next three seasons, Peter saw off Gennoe and then outlasted Ivan Katalinic. But then Peter Shilton arrived in the summer of 1982. Wells had outlived three competitors in five-and-a-half seasons but could not hope to contest the jersey with Shilton. Still only 27, he had almost 200 lower-division games left in him, before he wound down in non-league football. (from: https://www.saintsplayers.co.uk)

Steve Sutton

Steve Sutton began his career at Nottingham Forest as understudy to Peter Shilton. Following the departure in turn of Shilton’s replacement Hans van Breukelen in 1984, he then had to compete with Hans Segers for the No.1 jersey. He became regular first-choice in the middle 80s. After playing in two victorious League Cup finals in 1989 and 1990, Sutton’s position increasingly came under threat from promising understudy Mark Crossley. In his thirteen years with Nottingham Forest Sutton recorded 257 appearances for the first team, his moustache and lazy right eye making him something of a club icon during the period. After two brief spell with Coventry City and Luton Town, Sutton played five seasons with Derby County and ended his professional career at Birmingham City.
