Joe Bolton

A solid, no-nonsense full-back, Joe Bolton began his career with Sunderland in 1972. He quickly established himself in the first team and remained at Roker Park for nine seasons. A cult hero with fans, he was a key member of the team that won the Division Two title in 1976. With the Black Cats he made 273 league appearances and scored 11 goals. In 1981 Bolton signed for Sunderland’s North East rivals Middlesbrough, where in two seasons he made 59 appearances, scoring one goal. He then moved to Sheffield United, where he earned promotion from the Third Division in 1984 and ended his career in 1986.
