Fernando Gomes is considered one of the best strikers in the history of Porto and Portuguese football. Nicknamed “bi-Bota”, he was elected six times the Portuguese league’s top scorer, he won two France Football’s Golden Boots and was elected Portugal’s best player in 1983. With the Dragons he won five Portuguese leagues, three Portuguese cups, but above all, the 1987 European Cup (he did not play the final due to injury), the 1987 UEFA Supercup and the 1987 Intercontinental Cup (scoring a goal in the match against Penarol). In 1980 he moved to Spain, to Sporting Gijon but due to a bad injury he only played 4 games and scored a goal in his first season, but in the second, he was the top scorer of the team with 11 goals and reached the Copa del Rey final.
In 1989 he moved to Sporting CP, where he played his last two seasons. He was still the team’s top scorer and helped the green-and-whites reach the UEFA Cup semi-finals. With the national team, he played 48 times and scored 13 goals. He was part of the team at UEFA Euro 84 and the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico.
