Carlos Diarte

A Paraguayan striker, nicknamed “El Lobo” for his impressive physical condition, his speed and his sense of goal, Carlos Diarte made his debut at the age of 17 at Club Olimpia, where he won the Paraguayan league in 1971 and 1973. In January 1974, at 19, he moved to Spain, to Zaragoza. In his first two seasons he reached the 3rd and the 2nd in La Liga and became one of the best strikers in Spain. With Arrúa, Soto and Ocampos, he formed a group known as the “Zaraguayos”. In two and a half seasons, Diarte scored 40 goals in 87 games. In the summer of 1976, he moved to Valencia, where he formed a dream attack with Johnny Rep and Mario Kempes. In his first season he scored 16 goals in 27 games but due to a bad injury, his performance dropped dramatically. In 1979 he won a Copa del Rey, before moving to Salamanca, where he played for only one season. In 1980, he signed for Betis, where he rediscovered his sense of goal. He scored 27 goals in the first two seasons, while he only scored 4 goals in 21 games in the third. For the following three seasons he played in France with Saint-Etienne, before returning to Club Olimpia, where he ended his career in 1987. He played 45 times for the Paraguayan national team.

José Cerveró

A product of the Valencia CF academy (where he played throughout his career), José Cerveró was one of the best left-backs in the club’s history. He was a regular, tough and resilient defender, capable of playing on both flanks. In nine seasons he helped the team to win a Copa del Rey (1979), a Cup Winners’ Cup (1980) and a UEFA Super Cup (1980). The first manager to believe in Cerveró was Di Stéfano, who included him in the first team in January 1974. He was a fundamental player until the late seventies, when his physical qualities began to decline. He has played 256 official matches (250 as a starter). One of his best performance was the Copa del Rey final, won 2-0 against Real Madrid in 1979, when he canceled the right winger Roberto Martínez. He retired in 1983 at 33.

Daniel Solsona

Central midfielder or attacking midfielder, Daniel Solsona, nicknamed “El noi de Cornellà” was a key player of Espanyol throughout most of the 1970s. Although he was not a fast player, he possessed a great touch of the ball and an excellent vision. For these qualities he was also called-up seven times for Spain. In 1978 Solsona accepted the offer of the ambitious Valencia, that with him won a Copa del Rey in 1979, the Cup Winners’ Cup the following season and the 1980 UEFA Super Cup. After five seasons he was forced to leave the team due to the financial crisis of the club, then moved to France, to Bastia, where he remained for three seasons, before moving to Racing Club Paris (for a brief spell) and Stade Rennais. He ended his career after three seasons at Sant Andreu, Spain, in 1990.

Angel Castellanos

One of the best Spanish midfielder in the 70s and early 80s, Castellanos was a player with a reputation for being slow, rough and tough but thanks to his tactical intelligence and versatility, he was considered indispensable by every coach. He had a constant evolution in his game; he began playing as a wing half, converted as a defender and finally as a defensive midfielder. He began his career with CD Manchego, then played for Terrasa and Sabadell before signing Granada in 1972, where he played four seasons. During his years with the Andalusians, he was called up three times for Spain. In the 1976-77 season he signed for Valencia CF where he took over the position of starting midfielder for nine seasons. With Valencia he won the Copa del Rey in 1979, the Cup Winners’ Cup in the following season and the 1980 UEFA Super Cup. He leaved the club in 1986 to play again with Granada in Segunda Division B, where he ended his career.

Manuel Botubot

Product of the Cádiz CF academy, Manuel Botubot, considered one of the most talented Spanish centre backs, at the half of his first professional season (1976/77) in second division, was signed by Valencia, where, immediately, formed a complementary duo with Arias. Brave, powerful and elegant defender, in 1978 he also received his first and last call-up to the Spanish national team. In the following seasons, he was an undisputed starter, but, with the arrival of Tendillo, he was repositioned as a left-back, playing at excellent level. He won a Copa del Rey in 1979, a Cup Winners’ Cup title in the following season and the 1980 European Super Cup. Considered one of the best defenders in the history of Valencia, after 270 official games and three titles, Botubot leaved the club in 1984 to finish his career to Castellon and Xerez.
