Francoise Van der Elst was one of the best European right wingers in the late seventies. With Anderlecht he reached three consecutive Cup Winners’ Cup finals. He won in 1976 (scoring two goals in the final against West Ham) and 1978 (when he was the top scorer of the tournament). With the Belgian national team he reached the final of the 1980 European Championship (losing to Germany) and played two games at the 1982 FIFA World Cup. John McDowell

John McDowell played for both West Ham United and Norwich City during his career. He also played 13 international matches at U23 level between 1972-74. McDowell was a Hammers first team regular for almost 10 years at right back after Bonds switched to midfield. He made 249 league appearances for the Hammers, scoring 8 goals. Versatile and talented defender who was powerful in the tackle, McDowell formed a central defensive partnership with Frank Lampard until he suffered an injury that forced him to miss most of the 1976/77 season. Failure to secure a regular, first team spot after this injury led to a transfer to Norwich for whom he made 45 appearances, scoring once.

Graham Paddon

Graham Paddon brought to the English football a cocktail of flair, zest and determination which, combined with his characteristically sunny outlook, endeared him to the supporters of Norwich City and West Ham United during his 1970s heyday. With his flowing blond locks and constant darting movement between penalty boxes, it was impossible to miss the chunky little Mancunian on the pitch. Even more compelling was what he could do with his left foot, whether piercing a defence with one telling dispatch or thumping in a spectacular goal from long range. He wasn’t quite of international class, though he made one appearance for England at under-23 level as a permitted over-age player in 1976, but he was the type of skilful, effervescent entertainer without whom the domestic scene would have been so much the poorer. from: Independent.

With the Canaries, Paddon won two Second Division titlen and was included in the Norwich City Hall of Fame.

With the Hammers, he won the 1975 FA Cup and reached the Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1976.

Alan Curbishley

Alan Curbishley played midfield most notably for West Ham United, Birmingham City ad Charlton Athletic. He began his career with the Hammers. His arrival in the first team was so impressive that he was given the nickname “Whizz”. He appeared in the European Cup Winners’ Cup 3rd round tie against Den Haag in March 1976, aged 18, although he did not play in the semi-final games against Eintracht Frankfurt nor in the final against Anderlecht. Curbishley was unfortunate that his emergence at West Ham came at the time that the club was blessed with considerable midfield talent and he found himself consistently behind the likes of Trevor Brooking, Alan Devonshire, Geoff Pike and Pat Holland in the midfield pecking order. He transferred to Birmingham City in April 1979 then joined Aston Villa in 1983 and Charlton Athletic in the following year, where he helped the side to promotion to Division 1 in 1986. He then moved to Brighton & Hove Albion where he won promotion to the Second Division. He returned to Charlton as player/coach and retired in 1993.
