A versatile player, Nick Holmes was a natural left-sided player who could play as a full-back, central defender or midfielder. A loyal one-club man, Holmes played 14 years for Southampton.
He played in the 1976 FA Cup Final against Manchester United which Saints won 1-0, and also played and scored in the 1979 League Cup final against Nottingham Forest, which was lost 2-3.
He became club captain in 1980 then in 1984, with a midfield that was probably the best in the club’s history, Southampton finished second in First Division.
An injury forced him to retire from the game in 1987. In total, he played 543 times for the Saints, scoring 64 goals.
