Tommy Hutchison

A winger who combined a deft touch with a committed playing style, Tommy Hutchison began his career with Alloa Athletic in the Scottish Second Division, where he attracted the attention of English clubs. In February 1968 he moved to Blackpool in the Second Division, where he became a fan idol (in 2006 he was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame). In 1972 he moved to Coventry City in the First Division. He remained at Highfield Road for eight years, playing 355 games and scoring 30 goals. During his time in Coventry he played arguably the best football of his career, winning all of his 17 Scottish caps while at the club. “Mr Magic” (his nickname) has been voted player of the season 1975/76. A poll by the Coventry Evening Telegraph voted him the most popular Coventry player of the club’s First Division era. In 1980 Hutchison joined Manchester City. In May 1981 he reached the FA Cup final against Tottenham. Hutchinson scored the 1-0 goal but his own goal brought the final to the replay, which City lost 3-2. Hutchison later played for Hong Kong’s Bulova, Seattle Sounders (USA), Burnley and Swansea City where at 42, he made his European club competition debut. He is in the record books as the oldest player to have played for Swansea City (age 43). He left Swansea in 1991 to join the Southern League team Merthyr Tydfil, where he spent another three years before retiring in 1994 at the age of 46 after playing over a thousand games in his career. Capped 17 times for Scotland, Hutchison appeared at the 1974 World Cup, though was surprisingly omitted from the 1978 World Cup squad when he was arguably playing the finest football of his career.
