Sammy McIlroy was a solid and determined Northern Irish midfielder best remembered for his 11 seasons at Manchester United. With the Red Devils he won the FA Cup in 1977. From 1981 to 1985 he played for Stoke City, where he was awarded Player of the Year in his last season at the club. He also played for Manchester City, Orgryte (Sweden), Bury, Modling (Austria) and Preston North End. With the Northern Irish national team he made 88 appearances and scored 5 goals. He was part of the team that participated in the FIFA World Cup in 1982 and 1986.
